I am a competitive orienteer and a member of NE Ohio Orienteering. I make maps for the club, schools & camps. Some of my work can be found at my other web site: Schoolyard Adventures
Always the inventor, I have been thinking about the problem of making the use of our SPORTident BSF8 stations easier for the course setter. Toting the stands for local meets was a burden. We had tried attaching the stations to the flag's cord with wire-ties, but this didn't go over well because the orienteer is forced to rotate the station in order to insert the dibbler.
Before I designed my Si Flag Station Mount, I thought about everything we wanted the device to do.
1. It should be stable atop the flag so that punching is a one-handed operation.
2. It should also support an upright facing number plate that meets IOF standards.
3. It should have a reflector band attached for night orienteering visible from any direction.
4. It should be light weight, rugged and easily packable for quick setting.
I built a set for our local club. To do this, I searched for the best materials and built jigs to mass produce the mounts with precise measurements. The club has used them at events and found them rugged and convenient.
